Sankheda Furniture
Traditional sankheda furniture has its own unique charm in colours of golden, brown and orange. Keeping with the trends now colours of ivory, green, blue, purple are available. Sankheda furniture is made from teakwood cut to size and shaped on a rotary lathe. These tubular pieces are then smoothened and polished followed by a coat of primer. Floral and other typical vine likefloral designs are painted on these pieces. Geometrical shapes are also painted. Painting is done by a fine haired squirrel hair brush. These pieces are then again polished on a lathe followed by a coat of lacquer. Again these pieces are mounted on a lathe and baked over coals and smoothened with leaves. The pieces are drilled for the torques and groove joints and assembled into the final furniture. By way of adornment little bells are attached giving a unique ethnic look. Always use soft clean cloth to gently wipe and clean this furniture. The Legend of Sankheda: How it was bornAbout a hundred and fifty years ago carpenters residing in the village of Sankheda in Baroda district of Gujarat in Western India eked out a miserable existence. A wandering sadhu(holy man) came to the village seeking alms and the carpenters pleaded with him to improve their life. He taught them how to improve their skills and the finish of their product by lacquering their furniture. The carpenters have since then never looked back!
